My Call to Carmel BY HERALDO DA SILVA

Heraldo Da Silva, T.O.Carm.
Heraldo Da Silva,
T.O. Carm.

After almost seventy years of life experiences in three continents and one ocean, I strongly believe that our merciful God has a loving plan for each one of us. Looking back in retrospective, I now recognize the frequent presence of God in my life, but I did not know it then.

I will forever sing to Him the blessing of being born and raised Catholic in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, in the tiny Azores islands (a thousand miles from Portugal and two thousand from the East Coast). After elementary school, I felt the hand of God calling me to a Catholic seminary, where I studied philosophy and theology for several years. Although my parents were poor farmers and could not afford my seminary expenses, God however provided financial help by the way of some relatives and friends, living right here in our own Bay Area. My studies at the seminary had a very strong emphasis on logical scholasticism of Saint Thomas Aquinas, in which the way to God was more through the fear of the Lord and reason over the ways of the “heart” of a loving God. Due to emotional instability and a nervous breakdown, I had to leave the seminary, but that profound experience marked me for life; truly life is short but eternity is forever. Quotes from Carmel COLLECTED BY JOHN CASSIDY

Carmel is a rich resource for meditation. Consider the following quotes from our Carmelite brothers and sisters.

Mary, Therese, St. John, Blessed Elizabeth,Titus Brandsma, Benedicta

“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to your word.”
Our Lady, Queen of Mount Carmel

“I made the resolution never to consider whether the things commanded me appeared useful or not.... it is love alone that counts. Forget about whether something is needed or useful; see it (the demand, rule, obligation, etc.) as a whim of Jesus.”
St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face

It is not so essential to think much as to love much.
St. Teresa of Jesus

Mine are the heavens and mine is the earth; mine are the people, the righteous are mine and mine are the sinners; the angels are mine and the Mother of God, and all things are mine; and God Himself is mine and for me, for Christ is mine and all for me. What then do you ask for and seek, my soul? Yours is all this, and it is all for you.
St. John of the Cross
(Prayer of a Soul Taken in Love)

How happy I am to see myself imperfect and be in need of God's mercy.
St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face

The more lofty the degree of loving union to which God destines the soul, so much more profound and persistent must be its purification.
St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)

To be taken with love for a soul, God does not look on its greatness, but the greatness of its humility.
St. John of the Cross

Always remember to love your neighbor; always prefer the one who tries your patience, who tests your virtue, because with her you can always merit: suffering is Love; the Law is Love.
Bl. Mary of Jesus Crucified “The Little Arab”
