My Call to Carmel BY HOWARD THOMAS

Howard Thomas
Howard Thomas,
T.O. Carm.

I was born in Denver, Colorado on January 12, 1924. I was raised in Southeast Wyoming in dryland farming country and lived in La Grange. I attended High School in Rawlins, which is a railroad town, from which I graduated in June of 1942 and joined the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter.

In August of 1944 I married my high school sweetheart. Shortly after that two children came along real fast so it was a blessing that I was shipped back to the South Pacific for two more years. I resigned from the U.S. Navy in June of 1948 and then two more children showed up.

Later on we moved to the Bay Area. It was about this time our oldest son and daughter started going to catechism here at Holy Spirit Church. It was also around this same time that I started going to adult catechism and I was baptized and confirmed along with my children in 1956.

I drifted along in my life over the next few years attending Sunday Mass and joining this or that ministry and I was coming to the realization that there had to be more to following Jesus, and that my feeble efforts were just not cutting the mustard.

My life lacked a deep commitment to Jesus that I knew was necessary. I was feeling lonely and lost. It was becoming apparent to me that it was not through my own efforts that would bring Jesus into my life.

The wake-up call came for me when I was led by the Holy Spirit to attend a Carmelite information seminar that was being held by Our Lady of Mercy Carmelite Community here at Holy Spirit Church in 2001 or 2002. What a blessing this has been for me. My Jesus gave me a dedicated group of men and women living their lives, following their Lord and Savior. [Read more...]

Saint John of the Cross:
"God Desires to Inflame Our Hearts"

How gently and lovingly you wake in my heart, where in secret you dwell alone; and in your sweet breathing, filled with good and glory, how tenderly you swell my heart with love.—The Living Flame of Love

Saint John of the Cross
Saint John
of the Cross
Saint John of the Cross was born near Avila in Spain. As a child, he was playing near a pond one day. He slid into the depths of the water, but came up unharmed and did not sink again. A tall and beautiful Lady came to offer him Her hand. “No,” said the child, “You are too beautiful; my hand will dirty Yours.” Then an elderly gentleman appeared on the shore and extended his staff to the child to bring him to shore. These two were Mary and Joseph. Another time he fell into a well, and it was expected he would be retrieved lifeless. But he was seated and waiting peacefully. “A beautiful lady,” he said, “took me into Her cloak and sheltered me.” Thus John grew up under the gaze of Mary. [Read more...]

Sayings of Light and Love From the Collected Works of
St. John of the Cross

These sayings and spiritual wisdom are treasures from the Lord and are to be read and deliberated upon much in the same manner as we do in Lectio Divina. These are just a few of the sayings of Light and Love. They are from John of the Cross' own words.
  • Lord, my God, who will seek you with simple and pure love, and not find that you are all one can desire, for you show yourself first and go out to meet those who seek you?
  • If you do not fear falling alone, do you presume that you will rise up alone? Consider how much more can be accomplished by two together than by one alone.
  • The blind person who falls will not be able to get up alone; the blind person who does get up alone will go off on the wrong road.
  • God desires the smallest degree of purity of conscience in you more than all the works you can perform.
  • O sweetest love of God, so little known, whoever has found this rich mine is at rest!
